Samsung Wave is a milestone of sorts for the Korean company as this smartphone has Bada based operating system, that is developed by Samsung itself.

Bada is an open source initiative by Samsung which allows applet developers to develop applets that can be put on sale in the online applet store. By doing so Samsung is ensuring variety that is acceptable to the global diaspora. The online applet store also provides for certain applets to be dowloaded fo free. Already there are applets for social networking sites, weather reports, news headlines, and games, amongst others.

Samsung’s Wave has been designed to perform in many environments and appeals to many kinds of users. A Super Amoled screen is 20% brighter and 80% more visible in sunlight is a great relief for people using the phone outdoors on a bright sunny day. The screen is otherwise a high resolution that is 3.3 inches and is touch enabled.

1 GHz processing speed allows many applications to run at the same time. Videos, slide shows, and all sorts of applications run as smoothly as possible. Like other Samsung phones, this one too allows customizable home screens. One could have at most 10 of those home screens to suit ones taste, mood and the occasion.

A 5 MP camera with LED flash, autofocussing, face recognition, blink detection and notification, beauty shot, smile shot, panorama, geo-tagging, and built-in image editin are all that can be done on its photography front. And all of these facilities consume less power. The company claims it eats up 20% less electricity than the devices in its genre.

At Rs. 19,100, this smartphone appears to be as smart or even smarter than the ones double its price. We hope Samsung can tap the Indian markets with its Wave in the sails.

Toshiba takes on the iPad with its new concept dual-screen laptop, available in stores from August.

Toshiba has unveiled the Libretto W100, a new dual-touchscreen ultra-mobile laptop, which the company claims moves beyond slate and tablet PCs.

While the simplicity and and usability of the iPad is proving tough to beat, this smart new Toshiba has some clever features and also runs the full Windows 7 OS (Flash included).

Launched as a ‘concept product’ the W100 will be only available in limited numbers, with pricing reported by Engadget to be around $1,100.

The W100 provides two 7-inch multi-touch screens in a clamshell layout, designed for optimal mobile access to internet browsing, emails and social networking. The secondary screen doubles as a keypad with haptic feedback, providing a better feel for typing than an inert screen like the iPad’s.

Weighing in at just 1.8 pounds (0.8 kilos) and measuring 8 x 4.8 inches, the Toshiba certainly lives up to claims of portability. The folding double screens will be stronger than a larger single screen, as well as doing away with the need for the protective pouches so essential to iPads and slate PCs.

The W100 is well-spec’d inside too, with a decent 1.2GHz Intel Pentium processor and solid state 62GB drive for reliable and rapid access to stored files.

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, one USB port, integrated webcam and MicroSD port make the Libretto a pretty flexible machine from the company responsible for inventing the laptop 25 years ago.

The unusual design and progressive keypad technology in the Libretto have created quite a buzz. In a PC industry constantly chasing that elusive Apple ‘magic’, this latest offering from Toshiba seems to offer hope for creative alternatives.

MUMBAI: How does it feel to shake hands with an ex-cyborg, a man who has gone through the experience of being part-human part-robot in the past?

Well, the experience is tempered down somewhat when you hear Kevin Warwick joking about his own experiments with artificial intelligence at the University of Reading, UK.

“I’ve been a cyborg for three months,” he says, rolling his eyes and adding a la Arnold Schwarzenegger in ‘Terminator’, “And I’ll be back.”

The story so far goes that Kevin Warwick, who is currently visiting Mumbai, shocked the scientific world so much when he inserted a silicon chip in his forearm and connected himself to a computer in 1998, that when he actually connected his nervous system to a robot via the Internet to turn himself into a cyborg four years later, the world simply sat back to watch his experiments.

Was the experiment successful? “Well, it definitely let me realise a few of my dreams of communicating directly without speaking,” he replies.

“My nervous system was connected, from where I was in New York, to a robot in UK through the Internet, and I could actually move the robot’s hand by moving my hand. The experience worked vice versa too. In the sense, that when the robot gripped any object, I could sense the pressure thousands of miles away.”

Mr Warwick roped in his wife, Irena, to test his theory that communication between two people need not be through the old-fashioned way of speech.

“She had electrodes put into her hand, so that every time I moved, the signal from my nervous system reached hers directly,” he explains. “It was exciting to feel my nerves go ‘ting ting’ each time she moved, miles and miles away from me.”

Mr Warwick’s current project involves developing a robot which has five senses—besides having vision and hearing, it has a radar noise, an infra-red sensitive lip and an ultrasonic sensitive forehead.

“Most intelligent robots now work with two senses, I want to see whether this one can react better to the outside world, using five senses,” he says.

As far as human experimentation goes, a patient of multiple sclerosis has volunteered to have his brain connected to a computer, which will help him to do simple motor functions around the house and drive a car.

“I will be experimenting personally with a brain transplant after 10 years,” he adds. “Technically I know it’s possible to communicate what we’re thinking directly into the brain of another person. This implant may help me prove it.”

As for the dangers of self-experimentation, Mr Warwick argues that he knows the risks, but he isn’t the first since scientists have done this through history.

“Scientists have swallowed cholera-causing bacteria, inserted catheters in their hearts, etc,” he says. “I know I could have lost the use of my hand if anything had gone wrong with my nervous system implant. But I chose to take the risk. And no, right now there’s no worldwide ethical body to stop me from doing so.”

What is the purpose behind his dogged work on cybernetics, which began 15 years ago when he made his first simple robot? “Well, let’s accept it, in another 30 years, we are going to have machines and computers that will be more intelligent than human beings,” he replies.

“In an ideal world, it would be nice to say that we should be careful about how much intelligence we put in robots. But in the real world, there will always be people who will put in superior intelligence in robots, especially military robots. In such a scenario, it makes sense to upgrade the human brain too, in order to keep up. I believe that in the future humans will becomes cyborgs and no longer be stand-alone entities.”

The Flock developers have announced the release of a public beta for version 3.0 of their social web browser. Flock is a popular cross-platform browser that automatically manages updates and media from several popular social services, including MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, Digg, YouTube and Twitter.

As rumoured more than one year ago, this major update of Flock, version 3.0, is now based on Google’s open source Chromium browser platform rather than Mozilla’s Firefox 3 browser, as with previous 1.x and 2.x releases. In a post on the Flock blog, Flock CEO Shawn Hardin says that, “as the first major browser other than Google Chrome to be built on the Chromium platform, the new Flock is blazingly fast!”, adding that “The new Flock is designed to naturally complement the value we place in relationships and puts you at the centre of your friends and their conversations while you browse the Web.”

In addition to switching to Google’s browser platform, Flock 3.0 – which claims on its beta home page to be “Better than Internet Explorer” – now uses Google as the default search engine. Other notable changes include a redesigned user interface, a new account manager home page, better social networking integration and a number of performance and stability improvements. As Flock 3.0 is based on the same technology as Chrome, most Chrome Extensions are also supported.

As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter.

More details about the release, including a short video and a full list of new features, are available in the announcement press release and a blog post by Flock VP of Engineering Clayton Stark. Flock 3 Beta is available to download for Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. A Mac version of the browser is also in the works and is expected later this summer. Prospective users can request, from the beta home page, to be emailed when it’s ready. The latest stable release of Flock is version 2.6.0, based on Firefox 3.0.19.

After two weeks of buggier-than-usual service, the folks at Twitter say there’s even more downtime ahead.
by Daniel Ionescu

Following two rough weeks of buggy service, Twitter warned its users that more downtime should be expected over the next two weeks. The outages affecting Twitter have been the worst since last October, said Sean Garett, the company’s head of communications.

So far this month, Twitter has been down for 5 hours and 22 minutes, a total uptime of 98.54 percent, according to Pingdom, a Web performance monitoring company. In October 2009 Twitter had 1 hour and 10 minutes of downtime (99.84 percent), according to the same statistics.

The notorious Twitter “fail whale” has affected both the service’s Web site and third-party desktop and mobile applications, and the company said on its official blog that it is making adjustments to avoid outages during the World Cup.

Twitter says the problem behind the outages lies with record traffic experienced during the World Cup, and also with maintenance work to its network gone wrong, which it has detailed last week on its Engineering Blog.

“We’re working through tweaks to our system in order to provide greater stability at a time when we’re facing record traffic,” Garett wrote on the Twitter blog. “Over the next two weeks, we may perform relatively short planned maintenance on the site. During this time, the service will likely be taken down. We will not perform this work during World Cup games.”

Next to downtime, Twitter has also had problems in the last 24 hours with their tweet counts and experienced missing or duplicate tweets from their timelines. To fix this issue, Twitter recommended to repeatedly refresh your browser.

Despite the technical difficulties it is experiencing, Twitter introduced on Monday a new feature called Twitter Places, which allows users to tag messages with specific places via its new geolocation system.

Are you relying on Twitter for various forms of communication? Should the company be more efficient at resolving the downtime problems? Sound off in the comments.
